FalstaffDuring the depths of winter, opera lovers assemble to watch a DVD of an opera presented during the current MET season. We meet at 1 PM on Sundays at the Social Hall (rear entrance) at Temple B’rith Kodesh, located at 2131 Elmwood Avenue in Rochester, NY. Click here for directions.

A suggested donation for all four operas is $32.00 for Opera Guild of Rochester and $36.00 for non-donors. Temple members may attend for free.

A suggested donation for individual performances is $9.00 for Opera Guild of Rochester donors and $10.00 for non-donors. Temple members may attend for free. Refreshments will be served during intermissions.

Mark Adamo’s Little Women

This production, with Joyce DiDonato and Katherine Ciesynski, is of “a beautifully crafted work, brilliantly molding Alcott’s tale into operatic form.” (The New Yorker) It is a coming-of-age story with a particular focus and great appeal for adults and children alike. Opera Talk by Carol Crocca.

Richard Strauss’s Arabella

Librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal convinced Strauss to abandon the dissonant style of Electra and to return the lyrical style of Rosenkavalier, with this delightful opera as the result. Today’s production features Kiri te Kanawa, from a 1994 MET production. Opera Talk by Peter Dundas.

Rimsky-Korsakov’s Golden Cockerel

Rimsky-Korsakov’s last opera. Two hours long, a satire on military ineptitude with mystical plot elements and beautiful arias and orchestral numbers. Opera Talk by Art Axelrod.
